Putting the I into WISDOM

The Christians who have most influenced me for good have had a fully functional familiarity with the book of Proverbs. They were (and are) able to take their considerable knowledge and apply it to their lives, providing both godly examples and godly advice. Join with me as each one of us endeavors to put the I into WISDOM. Let us seek to exemplify God’s wisdom in our daily lives. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Proverbs 2:6-9 builds on the promise of verse 5, which ensures us that God will not withhold His wisdom if we seek it (and Him). Verse 6 reminds us that God is indeed the source of any wisdom that we have, a fact which should sweep away any sense of superiority and instead steer us to our Savior. The “sound wisdom” of verse 7 could be translated “victory,” as it is in the New International Version. The Hebrew word contains both thoughts: in other words, the very nature of God’s wisdom leads to spiritual success. This wise God is our shield (“buckler”) to protect us from sinful self-confidence and other attacks of Satan. In verse 8, God even calls His people “saints”! We are not perfect, of course, but we are perfectly safe in God’s salvation. This salvation is demonstrated in verse 9 by our increasingly wise behavior. We are more likely to do what is right (“righteousness”), what is just (“judgment”), and what is fair (“equity”). God has set “every good path” before us. Yes, we may sometimes stumble a bit, but God is moving us onto His way into a life that is consistently tending to what is good and godly. Do not be discouraged by the deviations; instead, discern the direction and the destination.
