Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Jesus never stops; He never stops working on our behalf; He never stops His work of salvation. We know that on the Cross Jesus cried “It is finished” (John 19:30). That act of redemption was complete. However, Jesus said in John 6:44, “No man can come to Me, except the Father Which hath sent Me draw him, and I will raise him up at the last day.” We do not find our own way to God and the salvation that He offers. The parable of the Prodigal Son is a great example of this truth. Luke 15:20 says of the wayward young man that “when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran.” The father saw his son because he was looking for him, just as our Father is ever looking for us and looking out for us. Note that the father “ran.” I enjoy running, but it is work – increasingly hard work as I get older. The labor of God in saving us and drawing us to that salvation is serious, intense work. Some of our work may be light, but the work of God never is. May we think of Him running to us, and may we love Him even more.
