Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

We return today to John 6 as we reflect on the fact that Jesus is personal. In John 6:64-66, the multitude abandoned Jesus, for they wanted only His miracles with no commitment to a genuine relationship with Him. They rejected His personal nature, personal touch, and personal salvation. In verse 67, Jesus then asked His twelve closest disciples, “Will ye also go away?” Peter responded, “Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe that Thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.” This is a powerful expression of personal faith, a faith that each one of us needs. The response of Jesus is sobering; in verse 70, He says “Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?” He was speaking of the traitor, Judas Iscariot (verse 71). These specific and searing words of Jesus remind us that salvation is not a group activity; no, it is found one-on-one with the Savior, Jesus Christ.
