Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Jesus is personal and He must be our personal Savior. This point is underscored by the account of Thomas’s salvation in John 20:19-31. Even the testimony of the other ten disciples who had seen the risen Jesus Christ (verse 19) was unconvincing to Thomas; he needed to see for himself (verse 25). The certainty of the ten was not his certainty; he wanted to be personally sure. The appearance of Jesus a week later (verses 26-27) to Thomas was the proof that he required to believe in the resurrection of the Savior. In verse 28, he said, “My Lord and my God.” Thomas finally understood that Jesus is fully God and thus fully capable of rising from the dead, defeating death and offering life everlasting. The repetition of the word “my” is a reminder that each one of us must individually come to faith in Jesus; no one else can claim this gift on our behalf.
