Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
John 1:1-5 directs us to the creativity of Jesus. He has made “all things” (verse 3), including human life (“In Him was life” – verse 4). His fashioning of our bodies is truly astonishing (Psalm 139:14), as we briefly considered yesterday. We should also marvel that this creation is not merely a process that our Lord has put into place, for it is intensely and intimately personal. What God said to the prophet Jeremiah He says to each one of us: “Before I framed thee in the body, I knew thee” (Jeremiah 1:5a). This rapt attention continues throughout our lives, for Jesus said that “the very hairs of your head are all numbered” (Matthew 10:30). This solicitude extends even to the end of our earthly lives: “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints” (Psalm 116:15). This world will try to convince us that we have no individual worth, but the Word makes it clear that Jesus knows otherwise and reassures us of the value that He places upon each one of us.
