Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
In closing our study of Jesus’ merciful nature, let us consider an additional application. In Matthew 17:14-18, a suffering father cries out to Jesus, “Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water” (verse 15). Jesus cast a demon out of this poor boy, “and the child was cured from that very hour” (verse 18). Jesus’ response to this father’s plea should encourage us to continue in intecessory prayer. The afflicted child was not able to pray for himself; even if he had been able, his father’s prayer was appropriate, for it was based on faith in Jesus and love for his son. We are at our best when we are praying for others and asking for God’s best in their lives. Our merciful Savior is at work through the intercessions of His people.
