Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

The Word of God is clear: Jesus Christ, God the Son, is the Head of all things. For example, Ephesians 4:15, part of a very long sentence, says, “But speaking the truth in love, [we] may grow up into Him in all things, which is the head, even Christ!” Verse 16 continues the physical imagery by equating the Church with “the whole body,” and we will consider the implications of that connection later in the week. For now, let us understand that the use of “head” points us to the power, authority, and leadership of Jesus. Since we are to become increasingly like Him (growing “up into Him in all things”), we should evaluate how we use our authority. We must not become tiny tyrants or little lords, for Jesus used His power not to benefit Himself but to provide the best for us. Because His leadership always takes us in the right direction, we should likewise direct others appropriately, “speaking the truth in love.” Only when we gratefully acknowledge the headship of Jesus can we begin to mature in our faith.
