Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

We return today to Colossians 2:9-10, where we find that Jesus is the Head of all things: “For in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in Him, [Who] is the head of all principality and power.” Jesus, fully God, has all power and authority over all power and authority (the meaning of “principality and power”). Why, then, as Asaph pondered in Psalm 73, does evil exist and appear to be in ascendancy? In simple terms, evil is what happens when we do not follow the headship of Jesus. Imagine a small child being in charge of a household, a young athlete making the decisions for a team, or a teen leading a major university. In all of these situations, things would degenerate quickly, for youngsters are not prepared to handle that level of responsibility. When we refuse the leadership of Jesus, we have set ourselves against what is right and good, and the sad outcome is necessarily evil. As always, Jesus offers not only a better way but the best way.
