Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Because Jesus is the Head of all things (Ephesians 4:15; Colossians 2:9-10), He is the Head of the Church. Colossians 1:18 clearly states, “He is the head of the body, the church.” Later, Paul warns about the dangers of “not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God” (Colossians 2:19). It is easy to look at the world as defiant and rebellious – it is! – but I Peter 4:17b says, “Judgment must begin at the house of God.” Thus, we must be careful within the Church about what we teach and believe. Some doctrine is clearly false (like “the worshipping of angels” – Colossians 2:18) and must be rejected. The standard for all churches is “that in all things He might have the preeminence” (Colossians 1:18). Ephesians 1:22-23 tells us of Jesus that God the Father “hath put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be the head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fulness of Him that filleth all in all.” Lord Jesus, may You fill our church with Yourself. May all that we teach be the truth about You.
