Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
The angel of light that appears in Revelation 18:1 delivers a precise message of divine justice: “And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, ‘Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is the habitation of devils [demons], and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird’” (verse 2). The physical destruction of Babylon by its supposed allies (Revelation 17:16) is under the superintending sovereignty of our Savior God (Revelation 17:17). “Every unclean and hateful bird” references the scavengers that will descend upon this city that was briefly the center of governmental, religious, and economic power in the world. Such scavengers accompany the sad loss of life that will occur in Babylon (and during Armageddon – see Revelation 19:17-21). Their presence is a grisly reminder of the reality of the futility of apposition to the Omnipotent One. Mankind has been thoroughly warned.
