Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Because “God hath remembered her [Babylon’s] iniquities” (Revelation 18:5b), sure and swift justice will prevail: “Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double. How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, ‘I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow’” (verses 6-7). The arrogance of Babylon is so great that the city, as well as the system it represents, feels insulated from any negative results of its wicked ways. Given the present blatant corruption of most governments and the lack of consequences, it is easy to see how a world government will act like a demanding diva, oblivious to reality. Such escapism is a hallmark of any attempt to ignore God and His righteousness. On the personal level, each one of us should take the enormous example of Babylon and apply it to our own lives, for “pride goeth before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18). This principle covers both the large and the little.
