Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Revelation 21:5 promises a transformative newness to each believer: “And He [Who] sat upon the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new.’ And He said unto me [John], ‘Write: for these words are true and faithful.’” One aspect of this newness involves time. Our days pass quickly – too quickly: “The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away” (Psalm 90:10). This tyranny of time will not exist in eternity. Revelation 21:6a says, “And He said unto me, ‘It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end!” In the presence of Jesus, time vanishes: there is no difference between “the beginning and the end.” As one familiar hymn reminds us, “When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more, / And the morning breaks eternal, bright and fair – / When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore / And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.” The absence of the constraints of time is necessary for us to be able to fully enjoy our new home, our new face-to-face relationship with our Lord, new music, a new eradication of our sin nature, and a new appreciation of all of these heavenly realities.
