Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Before the Apostle John reveals details about the eternal heavenly city, each one of us is presented with an eternal choice: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death” (Revelation 21:8). Whenever I see the word “but” in Scripture, I immediately look at what comes before and what comes after. I call “but” the conjunction of contrast, and there is a clear contrast here. Through faith in Jesus Christ, God the Son, each believer “shall inherit all things” (verse 7). Conversely, each one who rejects the salvation offered by the Savior will have his “part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” The only reasonable response to this revelation is to call upon Jesus for the everlasting life in heaven that He “freely” (verse 6) offers to each one of us.
