Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Continuing our study of the contrasts between Genesis and Revelation, we come to the creation of the seas. Genesis 1:10 states, “And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the water called He seas: and God saw that it was good.” Revelation 21:1c says of eternity, “There was no more sea.” Since God called the oceans “good,” we must insist that they are indeed good. In fact, the seas are essential for physical existence as we know it; the water cycle sustains life here on earth. In eternity, of course, this cycle will no longer be required. We have previously studied in detail that the sea is not inherently evil, but was used as a symbol of evil, unrest, mystery, and especially for the Apostle John imprisoned on the island of Patmos – separation. These uses of symbolism are no longer operative in our heavenly eternity. Thus, the “sea” is simply not needed there. We are reminded of – and blessed by – this thoughtful attention to detail that characterizes everything that our Savior God does.
