Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

“Behold, I come quickly,” promises our Savior in Revelation 22:7a. Another factor that can easily intrude upon our appreciation of this future fact is our present impatience. We tend to have a short-range view, for there are matters that have to be tended to every day. Furthermore, our culture frequently promotes immediate gratification. The breathless pace of life today is not conducive to contemplation. Most prophecy is slow, being fulfilled over many years, often centuries and even millennia. Thus, even Christians can become skeptics in practice: we might not boldly challenge the Biblical teaching of our Lord’s return by snippily saying, “Where is the promise of His coming?” – as the unbelievers do in II Peter 3:4. However, we can plow through life – even doing good things – and not give much thought to God’s long-range approach to prophetic fulfillment. Let us remember that time spent with the Lord now is time well-spent, including time reflecting on His sure and everlasting promises.
