Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Like so many of us who repeat the same sin, John duplicates his error of Revelation 19:10 in Revelation 22:8-9: “And I saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith he unto me, ‘See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.’” The simple remedy to avoid sin is to “worship God.” Truly, it is an elegant solution. We know that sin is wrong, that it grieves God, that it hurts others, and that it ensnares us in a downward spiral. We see the logic in turning away from sin. However, we need something to turn to so that we can replace the things that negatively impact us. That something is Someone – God Himself. Our worship of Him, at the very least, occupies us so that we are not actively engaging in sin. Furthermore, our attention is drawn away from ourselves and our baser desires and directed to the very best. Moreover, when we engage in public worship, we are helping others in their spiritual development, rather than harming them. Of course, God is inherently worthy of our worship. All of these factors demonstrate that the simple command to “worship God” is an effective antidote to our tendency to transgress.
