Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Jesus reminds us of Who He is in Revelation 22:16: “I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.” We will briefly consider the first part of this verse at a later date, and we studied the second part yesterday. Today, we turn our attention to Jesus’ self-description as “the bright and morning star.” Immediately we think of the prophecy of Numbers 24:17c-d: “There shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel.” At Jesus’ birth, the wisemen correctly understood that these words were fulfilled in Him and in the supernatural star that accompanied His nativity (Matthew 2:1-12). Luke 1:77-79 confirms that this Savior would “give light” to all people, including the non-Jewish magi from Persia. This promise is also found in Matthew 4:16: “The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.” May each believer continue to marvel that our Savior of light reached into our personal darkness of sin and drove it away. May anyone who is unsure of eternal salvation through faith in Jesus Christ respond to His light right now.
