Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
The third use of “Almighty” in the New Testament is found in Revelation 4:8: “And the four beasts [literally, living ones] had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, ‘Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, [Who] was, and is, and is to come.’” This one verse reveals three crucial characteristics of “the One Who has His hand on everything” (the meaning of “Almighty”). First, His holiness is emphasized. The threefold ascription is consistent with the Trinitarian teaching of One God in Three Persons – Father, Son, and Spirit. We can be certain that our Savior God is untouched by sin’s contamination and that His touch makes us holy: “And Jesus put forth His hand, and touched him [the leper], saying, ‘I will; be thou clean.’ And immediately his leprosy was cleansed” (Matthew 8:3). Second, He is eternal, meaning that His hand is everlastingly efficacious. Third, He is immutable; His unchanging nature assures us that He will never withdraw His strong and solicitous hand. Truly, He is the “Lord God Almighty” and is worthy of our trust.
