Putting the No into November – Part II
INTRODUCTION – The prefix un- negates the meaning of the root word. Last week, we found that God is unspeakable in His grace, words, and joy. Only God can take such a thoroughly negative word and make it completely positive, especially when we contemplate the results of the unspeakable horror of the Cross. Today, together, let us search out the unsearchable.
- GOD’S GREATNESS IS UNSEARCHABLE
Psalm 145:3 – The Psalmist calls God’s greatness “unsearchable”; however, he then proceeds to search out aspects of God’s greatness (see verses 4-8, for example). That we cannot know everything about God does not mean that we cannot know some things about God. We have also the example of Job. In Job 5:8, 9, he calls the great things of God “unsearchable” and immediately begins searching (see verses 10-12). How much time and effort do we spend searching out the greatness of God? There is always more to know, more to appreciate.
- GOD’S JUDGMENTS AND WAYS ARE UNSEARCHABLE
Romans 11:33-36 – God’s judgments are unsearchable because they are based on His sterling, impeccable character. Our judgments include bias and presupposition, lack of knowledge and paucity of wisdom. At the very least, we should see the great and grand contrasts between God’s judgments and ours. Moreover, God Himself is helping us in this search of the unsearchable, particularly through the work of God the Holy Spirit (see II Corinthians 2:9, 10).
- GOD’S RICHES ARE UNSEARCHABLE
Ephesians 3: 7, 8 – The riches of God transcend the material, but the imagery of material riches is instructive. Verses 16 and 17 of Romans 8 tell us that we possess a full inheritance through faith in Jesus Christ, God the Son. Unlike a regular inheritance, there are no bills that have to be paid first, for Jesus has paid everything. There is not even an attorney’s fee, because Jesus is our Advocate (see I John 2:1).
CONCLUSION – For the Christian, life is just the beginning of an everlasting search of (not for) our everlasting God. Eternal life in heaven will ever be exciting! Are you at that eternal beginning? Is Jesus your Savior?
