Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Mark 2:1-12 is a familiar story, a favorite flannelgraph lesson in Sunday school. To summarize, so many people were flocking to Jesus that the friends of a paralyzed man could not get near Him (verses 1-3). Thus, they went up the exterior stairway, removed the tiling and other materials found on roofs in Israel at that time, and lowered their prone friend on his pallet into the presence of Jesus (verse 4). Jesus miraculously healed this needy man: “And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, ‘We never saw it on this fashion’” (verse 12). An important discussion also takes place, which we will consider tomorrow. For today, three thoughts come to mind. First, the historical detail reminds us of the absolute accuracy of God’s Word. Even when speaking of mundane matters like roofing, the Bible is trustworthy. Second, the effort of the friends is commendable. Their faith was active, carrying their friend to Jesus and working to dismantle part of a roof that was likely around two feet deep. “Jesus saw their faith” (verse 5a) and was pleased. This principle holds for us, too. Third, the result was an immediate and thorough healing. No one could deny the miraculous might of the Messiah, for this man not only could walk but also had the strength to carry his bed. Our Savior does all things completely; His Cross is the definitive statement on that subject.
