Sermon Snippet – Simply Content

INTRODUCTION – Often this year, we have been studying some of the implications of “the simplicity [singleness of purpose] that is in Christ” (II Corinthians 11:3). On Mother’s Day, we touched upon the subject of contentment. Let us learn more about how to be content, simply content.

1. LET US THINK OFTEN ABOUT THE LITTLE BLESSINGS IN LIFE

The large difficulties of life find us without any effort on our part. All of us could easily and quickly compile a list of the bad things that we have endured. We cannot dismiss the sad memories or ignore present troubles. Jesus spoke directly about our difficulties (Matthew 6:34c – “Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof”). Earlier in this passage (Matthew 6:25-34), Jesus encouraged us to “behold” (verse 26) and to “consider” (verse 28) the small and simple things around us, enjoy them, and learn helpful spiritual lessons.

2. LET US NOT LOOK LONGINGLY ELSEWHERE

Verse 32a points out that unbelievers are controlled and consumed by possessions. If we fall into that trap – and such an approach to life is a trap – we will not be satisfied with anything else in life, including our close relationships. I Timothy 6:9 sternly states, “But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.” I Timothy 6:10 is a familiar warning, as is Matthew 6:24. Yes, even our closest relationship of all, that with our Savior, can be clouded by the pursuit of possessions, by the tyranny of the toys of this time.

3. LET US GIVE THANKS

One of the best things about our culture is that many still say, “Thank you.” An attitude of gratitude should characterize the Christian. By articulating our thanks to God, we are acknowledging His goodness, and we are much more likely to remember the blessings. The more we give thanks, the more our burdens will be lifted; for the opposite of “taking thought” (verse 27 – see also verses 25, 28, 31, and 34) is the giving of thanks.

4. LET US REMEMBER THAT HEAVEN AWAITS

“The kingdom of God” (verse 33) is ultimately heaven (see also Matthew 6:20). Since nothing can compare with our heaven-haven, it is silly to seek to stack up stuff here (as Matthew 6:19 tells us). God is taking care of us now, and He will add to our blessings in eternity: “All these things shall be added unto you” (verse 33b) – if we simply trust in Jesus for salvation.

CONCLUSION – I Timothy 6:6 says that “godliness with contentment is great gain.” Contentment is part of godly behavior. It is good for us, and it is the right perspective on life. Lord, help us to grow in contentment.
