Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Because our Savior is always blessedly consistent, He cared for the physical needs of the thousands of the curious as much as He cared for those of His twelve closest followers. Mark 6:35-37 says, “And when the day was now far spent, His disciples came unto Him, and said, ‘This is a desert place, and now is the time far passed: send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat.’ He answered and said unto them, ‘Give ye them to eat.’ And they say unto Him, ‘Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat?’” Just as Jesus wanted His disciples to have a break, He desired that this crowd break their unplanned fast. Still, though, these hungry people would not have starved if Jesus did not miraculously feed them. His words (verse 34) should have been far more important to them: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4b). May we remain hungry for the life-sustaining Word of God.
