Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

After Jesus kindly took a man who could neither hear nor speak aside from the gaping, gawking crowd (Mark 7:32-33a), “[He] put His fingers upon his ears, and He spit, and touched his tongue; and looking up into heaven, He sighed, and saith unto him, ‘Ephphatha,’ that is, ‘Be opened.’ And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain” (verses 33b-35). This healing was immediate (“straightway”) and absolute (“he spake plain”). This man did not need to learn how to speak as someone who had had surgery would require. Jesus removed the physical source of this man’s deafness (“his ears were opened”) and his muteness (“the string of his tongue was loosed” – some impediment was eradicated). This simultaneous miracle of healing directs us to the blessed thoroughness of our Savior. He is always at work and is able to accomplish many things at once without any strain or difficulty. Truly, He “is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20a).
