Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
In Mark 8:36-37, Jesus asks two probing questions: “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” The logic of Jesus is impeccable. No reasonable person would disagree with the absolute statements implicit in these crucial queries, for nothing is more important than the “soul” – who a person truly is. However, man’s sin nature is such that many seek a third option when there are only two. We cannot cling to part of the “world,” have a bit of (or even a great deal of) religion, and be ready for everlasting life. Because each person is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27), each “soul” is made to last for eternity. The only current uncertainty is where that “soul” will reside forever – in heaven with Jesus or in hell separate from Him (Matthew 25:46). This uncertainty becomes certainty when anyone asks Jesus for His salvation. May each one of us be sure that Jesus is Savior, for then we have certainty for eternity.
