Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

We considered Colossians 2:13-14 on Tuesday: “And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath He quickened together with Him, having forgiven all your trespasses; blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross.” The Bible teaches that we all are indeed spiritually “dead” because of sin. For example, Ephesians 2:1b says of Christians that we “were dead in trespasses and sins.” As the lifeless body of Jesus was taken from the Cross and buried in a stone-sealed sepulchre, He was fulfilling the plan of salvation that would transform us from death to life. We are “quickened [made alive] together with Him.” Our future resurrection is thus as certain as the historical fact of Jesus’ rising from the tomb. He defeated death and sin, hell and Satan, and He defeated these enemies for us. He thus has “forgiven all” of our “trespasses.” May we truly celebrate Easter in the certainty of this eternal forgiveness, offered freely through faith in the Savior, Jesus Christ.
