Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
We move to another aspect of Jesus’ statement of Mark 12:17: “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” We have spent several days considering our national citizenship. Let us now think about our heavenly citizenship (Philippians 3:20). Is it easier or harder than our earthly citizenship? It is both (and, no, I am not running for political office – perish that thought, and may it never be). It is easier in that it is immediately and readily available to all: “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13). Also, God’s governance does not change: “Jesus Christ [is] the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8). Human government is variable, with individual leaders both good and bad in power for varying periods of time. Different laws are enacted, again for both good and bad. Citizenship in heaven is also easier in that God ever, only, and always seeks our best. The same cannot be said of even the finest government. The superiority of heavenly citizenship is consistent with our Savior God’s blessed character.
