Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Jesus demonstrates His divinity in His teaching regarding the poor widow: “And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. And He called unto Him His disciples, and saith unto them, ‘Verily I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: for all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living’” (Mark 12:42-44). Because He is fully God, Jesus knows that this woman is poor, that she is a widow, that she gave two small coins, and that she gave “all that she had, even all her living.” It is both comforting and convicting to know that our Savior God knows everything about us, forgives the bad and lauds the good, and loves us throughout both. His precise knowledge of this lady answers our unspoken question: “How did she survive?” We do not have the details of what happened to her after she left the Temple. Perhaps a kind neighbor – for there were good, God-fearing people in Israel – provided meals for her. Perhaps someone gave her a job that provided for her needs. We do know that God’s promise applied to her: “My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). This promise applies to each one of us, as well.
