Carpenter Diem (Because Jesus Was a Carpenter and Is Now Preparing a Home for His People)

The resurrection of God the Son, Jesus Christ, is crucial to the Christian faith. In Luke 24:13-35, we read of the resurrected Savior walking the road to Emmaus. This specific geographical reference reminds us of the absolute accuracy of God’s Word in all areas. In verse 27, Jesus begins to teach from the Old Testament; He not only walked the talk but also talked the walk! This passage does not reveal the exact Scriptures Jesus employed to teach these journeying believers, but we do know that He fulfilled the entire Old Testament (Matthew 5:17,18). Fulfilled prophecy is one of the major reasons that we can be certain that our faith in Jesus is not misplaced. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

On Tuesday, we touched upon the Davidic covenant, which is found in II Samuel 7:8-16, especially beginning in verse 12. This unilateral covenant that God made with David culminates in the promise in verse 16 that David’s “throne shall be established forever.” King Jesus is the fulfillment of this prophecy. Matthew 1:20 is specific that Joseph, Jesus’ legal father, was of the line of David. Matthew 1:16 is also crucial: note that “whom” is feminine singular in the Greek, meaning that Jesus was not born biologically of Joseph but of the Holy Spirit; the Virgin Birth of Jesus is absolutely necessary to our faith, for Jesus is far more than a human king. In Matthew 19:28, Jesus speaks of “the throne of His glory.” Revelation 19:16 calls Jesus “King of Kings and Lord of Lords.” No throne other than that of Jesus “shall be established forever.” We are now walking on the King’s Highway; one day, we will see Jesus enthroned as King of Eternity. Human governments will fail and even fall, but our Potentate is omnipotent.

God made a very precise promise to David, a man who was seriously flawed. Yet, that promise was fulfilled in Jesus Christ. All of us can trust God to keep all of His promises because, as Blind Willie Johnson sang, “He’s God, and He don’t change.”
