Our church officially began in 1864. The present building was moved here in 1880, renovated, and dedicated in 1881. For those who enjoy reading, Sarah Orne Jewett’s story “The White Rose Road” would have brought her right by the church as she traveled with her father, the town doctor. The revered Elder of the novels of Gladys Hasty Carroll was our own Pastor Zebulon Knight, who served from 1877 to 1918. The big rock next to the parking lot is a local landmark, played on by generations of neighborhood children. We are often called the Tatnic Church because we are the sole place of worship in the rural area of South Berwick and Wells that is traditionally called Tatnic. Our historical roots run deep in the native stony soil, but our foundation has always been Jesus Christ.
