Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Isaiah 54:5 is filled with prophetic messages about the Messiah, Jesus Christ: “For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is His name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; the God of the whole earth shall He be called.” We have already considered Jesus as our Maker (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16) and as the Husband of the church (Ephesians 5:22-33). He also possesses all power, for “the LORD of hosts is His name.” “Name” means character or nature; in other words, Jesus is our Almighty Lord. He is omnipotent (all-powerful). It is a humbling exercise to honestly examine ourselves and determine what we would do if we had such power. We do not need to guess, for we have thousands of years of mankind’s history to inform us. We do not have a sterling record. Slavery comes immediately to mind. Governmental abuse of all sorts is ever before us: I remember one leftist politician (who later became President) who used his authority in his home state to seize by eminent domain the land of a rival. A common manifestation of the abuse of power is emotional manipulation, which lies within the power of all people. Let us be grateful that our Lord rejects all such abuses of authority and instead uses His strength to save us for eternity.
