Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Mark 6:38 continues the account of Jesus’ concern for the hungry people who followed Him to a previously deserted place: “He saith unto them [His disciples], ‘How many loaves have ye? Go and see.’ And when they knew, they say, ‘Five, and two fishes.’” The parallel passage in John 6:8-9 provides the additional details that this food belonged to a young boy and that Andrew was the disciple responsible for finding him. These small specificities remind us of the absolute reliability of Scripture. We know, of course, that Jesus could have created food out of nothing, for He created the entire universe out of nothing (Genesis 1; John 1:1-3; Colossians 1:16-17). He chose to perform this miracle in this manner, in part, to include this youngster (imagine the impact upon him!) and to teach all of us that Jesus will effectively employ even the tiniest thing if it is committed to Him. Let us always remember that we are not called to be great; rather, we are called to be faithful.
