Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

If we are to live quiet and peaceable lives (I Timothy 2:2-3), each of us must have a personal relationship with Jesus, God the Son. This is the “one thing [that] is needful” (Luke 10:42). Part of any good relationship is communication; good communication involves listening. In Luke 10:39, we find Mary taking the time to listen intently to Jesus. Psalm 46:10a kindly commands, “Be still, and know that I am God.” “Be still” literally means “cease striving.” Martha, Mary’s busy and bustling sister, was striving, and she needed to slow down. If we are like Mary and listen to Jesus, He will calm us. We will “know,” for example, that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). We will learn that “in quietness and in confidence [trust] shall be your strength” (Isaiah 30:15b). Lord, help us to listen.
