Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

We have been considering the surprising term “Everlasting Father” (Isaiah 9:6) that refers to the Messiah, Jesus Christ, God the Son. Analogies are limited and must be used with care, but it is possible to be both father and son (I am!). Jesus is God the Son in the relationship of the Trinity. For example, John 1:18 states, “No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, [Who] is in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared Him.” One role of Jesus as Son, then, is to reveal the Father, and He faithfully fulfilled that task. Of course, only God can reveal God, and Jesus is fully God. Jesus is the Son within the relationship of the Trinity, but He is Father to His children. Mark 10:13-16 is one passage (of many) that indicates Jesus’ fatherly concern for us. He illustrated His love for “the little children” (verse 14) as “He took them up in His arms, put His hands upon them, and blessed them” (verse 16). He applied His reception of these little ones to each believer: “Verily I say unto you, whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein” (verse 15). When we submit ourselves in faith to Jesus, He becomes our spiritual Father – our spiritual Everlasting Father.
