Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

We return to Mark 6:47-48a-b: “And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and He alone on the land. And He saw them in toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary to them.” Commenting on the parallel passage in Matthew 14:22-33, the exceptional preacher Warren Wiersbe concluded, “They were safer in the storm of God’s will than on land with the crowds out of God’s will.” Indeed, so are we all. We know how hard life can be, at least at times. I have often thought how much harder life must be without faith in Jesus and without the assurance that He is sovereign even in the most troubling circumstances. We also have the ongoing certainty that He is praying for us now – even as we pray to Him! Hebrews 7:25b says of Jesus that “He ever liveth to make intercession for them [believers].” Obviously, we need this spiritual help to sustain us through our personal storms. It is a great solace to know that He sees us even though we cannot currently see Him and that His presence not only is with us but also goes on before us.
