Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
The Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ is crucial to our understanding of the sinless nature of our Savior. His impeccability is confirmed throughout Scripture. For example, in Mark 14:55-59, the sworn enemies of Jesus, seeking His death, could not point to even one blemish in His life. Instead, Acts 10:38 tells us that Jesus “went about doing good.” One compelling instance of this positive behavior is found in Matthew 9:35-38. Jesus taught the good news (“gospel”) and healed “every” physical affliction (verse 35); there was no limit to His goodness. Verse 36 has long been a favorite of mine: “But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.” The original Greek word for “moved with compassion” is an exceptionally powerful one, indicating a strong sympathy and a genuine aching for people. In other words, His good works were always driven by a deep desire of fervent, merciful love. His activity on our behalfs is not sterile and separate. No, His actions spring from His sympathetic, caring nature. The sinlessness of Jesus is clearly attested by His kind acts and by the compassionate attitude that undergirds all that He does.
