Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
We return to the implications of Revelation 17:14: “These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for He is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with Him are called, and chosen, and faithful.” Yesterday, we briefly considered the lavish and everlasting love that our “Lord of lords” has for us. A deepening love in return is a reasonable response from us. I find it helpful to occasionally meditate upon the path that my life could have taken had not the love of Jesus enfolded me at a young age. He surrounded me with many Christian influences, even though I did not actively seek them out. I learned to read at a very young age, and by the time I was six I was regularly reading the Bible, mostly because I simply loved to read. I read the Bible in its entirety for the first time when I was fourteen, in part because I have never left a book unfinished, in part because I was enthralled. Both of my majors in college prepared me for potential lucrative careers; but because I did not want to leave home (or a certain blonde bombshell that I later married), my education was directed into the ministry. Rarely did I make bold decisions; usually, only one way was open to me. When I reflect on these (and many other) people and circumstances in my life, I now see clearly the loving hand of the Savior. May our love for Him grow as we ponder what might have been and compare it to what is.
