Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
We continue to consider the implications of Revelation 17:14: “These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them; for He is Lord of lords, and King of kings; and they that are with Him are called, and chosen, and faithful.” As we saw yesterday from Romans 7, if we try to govern ourselves, we will struggle and fail; we need Jesus. If we are “with Him,” we will join in His victory; we indeed “shall overcome.” A major dynamic in this overcoming is the indwelling power of God the Holy Spirit in each Christian: “What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [Who] is in you, [Who] ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” (I Corinthians 6:19). The Scriptural teaching is clear: a major role of God the Holy Spirit is to indwell and empower each believer in Christ; He is the dynamic Person in our lives. Our power, as Paul found out personally, is not enough to “overcome” anything in the spiritual realm. However, the power of the Spirit is real power. Thus, we can “overcome” – and we will, as we yield ourselves to the personal governance of God (Ephesians 5:18).
