Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

From John 1:1-5, we have been thinking of the creativity of Jesus. He has made “all things” (verse 3), including language (He is “the Word” – verse 1), light (verses 4-5), and life (verse 4). All of these are intrinsic to His nature. Language directs us to the relationships within the Trinity; light reminds us that only goodness resides in Him; and life helps us to understand that Jesus is self-existent (see His “I AM” statements in John 6:35, 48, 51; 8:12, 58; 9:5; 10:7, 9, 11, 14; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1, 5; 18:5). A reasonable response to these truths is to appreciate and enjoy these gifts, for He “giveth us richly all things to enjoy” (I Timothy 6:17). We should also use our creativity in ways that reflect our Savior’s character, for “we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10). “Workmanship” means “work of art.” Since Jesus views us as works of art (obviously, works in progress), we must seek to use our God-given abilities to create that which is pleasing to Him.
