Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Revelation 19:16 says of Jesus, “And He hath on His vesture and on His thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.” This descriptive designation is found on the portion of Jesus’ robe that covers the upper leg (the meaning of “on His vesture and on His thigh”). Thus, this revelatory name would be visible whether Jesus were standing or seated upon “a white horse” (Revelation 19:11). His right to rule cannot be denied: it is simply His inherent nature to be King and Lord of all. The Messianic Psalm 2 details His earthly rulership. “The kings of the earth” (verse 2) try to defy the inevitable truth about the “anointed” (also verse 2), but He is the Messiah (the Hebrew word translated “anointed”) and will “break them with a rod of iron” (verse 9). Jesus, the “Son” (verse 7), will reign as “king” on the “holy hill of Zion” (verse 6). There in Jerusalem, He will inaugurate His righteous rule. The Psalmist wisely counsels that we make the right decision now based upon that future certainty: “Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed ye judges of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and ye perish from the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in Him” (verses 10-12). Remarkably, our Savior invites us to “kiss” Him; in other words, we can approach Him and come close to Him, even though He is “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.” “Blessed” are we indeed.
