Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

The lyrics of the heavenly hymn found in Revelation 15:3-4 focus us upon our Savior God: “And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, ‘Great and marvellous are Thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are Thy ways, Thou King of saints. Who shall not fear Thee, O Lord, and glorify Thy name? For Thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before Thee; for Thy judgments are made manifest!” The designation “Lord God Almighty” points us to the omnipotence of our unchanging Savior. He exercised tremendous power in providing dry land for the Israelites’ crossing of the Red Sea, and He demonstrated even greater might as “He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem” (Luke 9:51b) to die on the Cross to save us from the eternal consequences of our sin. One of my favorite books of the Bible is Amos. That farmer-preacher gave us this soaring song of praise: “For, lo, He [Who] formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, [Who] maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is His name” (4:13). All of these awesome activities are in the arms of the Almighty – and so are we, for “underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deuteronomy 33:27b).
