Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Revelation 19:15 records the ninth use of “Almighty” in the new Testament. Referring to Jesus, God the Son, this verse says, “And out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations: and He shall rule them with a rod of iron: and He treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.” Throughout our studies in this last book of the Bible, I have regularly commented on the fact that some (perhaps many) are uncomfortable with words such as “fierceness” and “wrath” in connection with our Savior. Logically, though, “the One Who has His hand on everything” (the meaning of “Almighty”) must deal with rebellion; if He did not, all that is good would be ravaged by the savage rebels. Theologically, since He is “the One Who has His hand on everything,” He will personally return to earth to achieve the final and sadly necessary victory that will usher in “a new heaven and a new earth” (Revelation 21:1). Thus, His “fierceness and wrath” are crucial in bringing about that which is eternally good.
