Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Because “God is light” (I John 1:5) and Jesus is fully God, He is the “Light of the world” (John 8:12; 9:5). Isaiah 9 is a well-known Messianic passage; for example, verse 6 is a key part of Handel’s Messiah. Verse 2 speaks to our theme of light: “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.” Verse 1 states specifically that this light would be seen “in Galilee.” Matthew 4:12-16 applies this prophecy directly to Jesus and His ministry. The precise geographical locations, including Galilee, demonstrate the absolute accuracy of God’s Word. The entire earthly ministry of Jesus was one of light; wherever He went, the darkness was disrupted. In the darkest of places, the light of Jesus was shining and drawing, and it still is.
