Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Jesus is eternal, including in the past, as we have considered for several days. Although it sounds odd to say, Jesus is eternal in the present; in practical terms, He is the same today as He always has been and always will be. Revelation 1:8 proclaims, “’I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending,’ saith the Lord, ‘which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.’” The verb “is” points us to the immutability of Jesus: as Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” I John 4:8 and 16 both state that “God is love.” The present tense points us again to the fact that Jesus does not change and thus that His love does not change. He loved before man was created, for love is intrinsic to the nature of God and is an integral part of the eternal relationships found within the Trinity between Father, Son, and Spirit. From that eternal love came Creation, including the creation of man. The love that Jesus has for us, then, does not fluctuate, for Jesus Himself cannot and will not change.
