Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
John 8:28-32 tells us clearly that Jesus sets His people free. In practical terms, though, we are prone to wander back into servitude to Satan and sin. John 8:44 reminds us that Satan is ever evil and always active. In Romans 7:15-24, Paul records the ongoing spiritual struggle of the Christian. Because we still possess a sin nature, we battle with bondage to bad things. However, we no longer fight alone. Verse 25 provides us with the great answer to our dilemma: “I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.” I think of a song that says, “I don’t have to do that anymore.” The presence of the Greatest Emancipator in our lives is real and really makes our spiritual conflict winnable. “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).
