Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Because Jesus is eternal, He has always existed, is the same today, and is our end. Revelation 1:8 says, “’I am Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the Ending,’ saith the Lord, ‘[Who] is, and [Who] was, and [Who] is to come, the Almighty. ‘” Revelation 1:18 adds, “I am He [Who] liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and death.” Since He is “alive for evermore”, He is thus our everlasting end. Of course, some ends can be bad (who wants a good book or a vacation to close?) Some ends – such as the last day of boot camp or the last minute of childbirth – are decidedly good. Some endings are more ambiguous. For example, when I run or walk with my wife in the woods, she prefers that I go first in order to clear out the spider webs, perhaps indicating an end of romance but not of utility! With Jesus, we can be certain that the end is the absolute best. John 13:1 states, “Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour was come that He should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved His own which were in the world, He loved them unto the end.” Jesus loved them – and us – fully and completely, even caring enough to wash their feet (verses 2-10) before He would die on the Cross. We can thus be certain that when we come to any ending, we will find the love of Jesus there.
