Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Hebrews 6:10-20 makes it clear that Jesus gives us hope because He Himself is the object of this hope. We can easily contrast this certain hope with what the world calls hope. This passage speaks of Abraham, who at the age of 100 experienced the birth of his promised son. Romans 4:18, also referring to this miraculous event, says that Abraham “against hope believed in hope.” The world, rejecting the possibility of the miraculous, would suggest that the “against hope” part of the verse is the only part which is sensible. However, God had spoken to Abraham and had promised a certain outcome, one necessitating a miracle. Abraham “believed in hope” based on God’s promise. At best, the world’s hope is a maybe, a perhaps that does not include the presence and intervention of our Savior. Our hope, like Abraham’s, originates in God and finds its object in Him.
