Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

A comparison of the beginning and the end – of Genesis and Revelation – provides helpful insights. For example, Genesis 1:5 delineates the creation of night: “And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.” Revelation 22:5 records, “And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.” There is nothing wrong with night, of course, for it was created by our good and perfect God. Here, night provides a pleasing contrast with day and has its own beauty. In a practical sense, it is a time for sleep, something that we both need and appreciate at the end of a busy day. In eternity, we will not need nightly rest, for the believer’s resurrection body is different: “It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: it is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: it is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body” (I Corinthians 15:42b-44a). Also, as a matter of practical theology, it is not possible for darkness to exist in the immediate presence of God: “God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all” (I John 1:5b). In heaven, “the Lamb is the light thereof” (Revelation 21:23c), and that light cannot be covered.
