Melodic Mondays
Those of you who know me know that I love music even though I am not musical myself. I listen to good music as often as I can. It is beneficial to the brain, valuable to the vocabulary, and strengthening to the soul. Isaiah 12:2-3 is a lovely passage that includes this soaring statement of surety: “The Lord JEHOVAH [YAHWEH] is my strength and my song.” This could be translated, “God is my mountaintop and my music.” Yes, He is! Each Monday, I want to study this subject and suggest a song to listen to. Anyone reading this devotional has easy access to any song. (I am an exception because I do not go on a computer or other information device.) If you do not like my suggestion (and we all have different tastes), you can think of or search for one that speaks to you. Then, it can become a source of encouragement throughout the week.
As you know, we are now in a high inflationary period (twice as high as the official CPI) and an economic recession, both courtesy of bad governmental policy. As we approach the end of human history, we are told that economic disruptions like “famines, and pestilences” will occur (Matthew 24:7). During the Tribulation, the world economy will collapse (Revelation 18:11-19), and the tyrannical world leader called the Antichrist, through his second-in-command (Revelation 13:11), will control all aspects of the economy (Revelation 13:161-18). Jesus has graciously warned us of these coming evil events, and He will gloriously remove His people before the onset and onslaught of the Tribulation. The Carter Family’s “No Depression,” recorded during the Great Depression of the 1930’s, contrasts the uncertainties of this life with the certainty of heaven. Their version, like all of their music, features the distinctive voice of Sarah and the guitar virtuosity of Maybelle (cousins who married Carter brothers). A newer rendition with better sound quality is by Uncle Tupelo.
