Putting the I into WISDOM
The Christians who have most influenced me for good have had a fully functional familiarity with the book of Proverbs. They were (and are) able to take their considerable knowledge and apply it to their lives, providing both godly examples and godly advice. Join with me as each one of us endeavors to put the I into WISDOM. Let us seek to exemplify God’s wisdom in our daily lives. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Proverbs 2:1-3 tells us that we must study the Bible (verse 1), listen to Biblical preaching (verse 2), and pray intently (verse 3) if we are to attain godly wisdom. Verse 4 adds an interesting word picture to this list of necessities. Metaphorically, we are to mine for wisdom as we would for “silver” or other “treasure.” Several thoughts are suggested by this imagery. First, mining involves much drudgery. Diligent and daily effort is required. Second, wisdom is a sadly scarce thing. Not every shovelful yields silver, nor does each tuft of ground guard treasure. Third, wisdom is extraordinarily valuable, as are most things that are scarce. Fourth, this earthy imagery reminds us that God’s wisdom is down-to-earth; it is practical, covering all areas of life. Thus, we must dig deep into God’s Word and into prayer to discover the riches of God’s wisdom (Romans 11:33).
