Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Before we move on from “the marriage supper of the Lamb” (Revelation 19:7-9), there is another comparison that is Scriptural. In Matthew 26:26-29, Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper, what we usually call Communion. Built into this service of remembrance is a specific promise: “I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom” (verse 29). Our Communion service appropriately looks back to the Cross, where Jesus as “the Lamb” gave Himself as a sacrifice for us and in our places: “For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us” (I Corinthians 5:7b). Moreover, Communion looks ahead to the fullness of our face-to-face relationship with our Savior. He will partake of the “fruit of the vine” with us on “that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.” This promise will be fulfilled at “the marriage supper of the Lamb.” Paul excoriated the Corinthian Christians because of factionalism and favoritism shown at their Communion services (I Corinthians 11:17-34). May we heed that Biblical warning, and may we remember that when we partake of the Lord’s supper here we are prefiguring “the marriage supper of the Lamb” in heaven.
